Fred Enke golf course

February 23rd

1:07 tee time

52° to start 58 A pretty good chilly breeze about 10 to 15 mph but we have full sun!

We are golfing the day after its rained two successive days in a row. The course is in beautiful condition and the greens are still fast. I don’t do good with fast…

The major features of the course are its cool teeing areas, large greens, strategic bunkers and sand traps, and most important of all, its concept as a semi-arid, limited turf course. Grass is used only on the tees, ball landing areas, and greens, with undisturbed native plants comprising the remainder of the landscaping. This is definitely a shot making course from the tees to the fairway landing areas. It’s another of the target-style desert courses in Tucson.

Cart paths are all dirt, gravel, rock on the front and some of the back holes have concrete. Green to tee had some long winding drives through the desert. The same desert that the snakes share with us. The first thing I see as I’m walking out to the starter building is a sign saying watch for rattle snakes. I didn’t see any but I’m sure they’re out there… I refer to this course layout as a shot makers course but it also has a lot of sucker holes, I mean who shouldn’t be pulling out the driver all the time… There are a few dry bed creeks, and desert bush as obstacles, but again, we haven’t seen any rattlesnakes.

I’m playing ok, getting off the tees pretty good, I’m hitting them straight and long today, same as two days ago. I decided to play the gold on the front nine because I thought I didn’t know the course… That decision was dumb, shot making seemed more difficult with the course shortened. In other words I was driving too far and had to bring out the 3-wood off the gold tee boxes. When the ball ends up in the dormant grass or sand, which is everywhere, you don’t score well. Made the decision to play the whites for the back nine… The real frustrating part was my wedge play, it was horrible, I mean horrible, it hasn’t been consistant and at times it’s been pathetic. As a result I’m 3-putting way to often… In my defense the greens have been firm and incredibly fast. I kept thinking to myself, what a dumb ass move back to the White tees so I did and it didn’t make much of a difference, the wedge still failed me. The thing i’m learning with desert golf is to hit them short and let them roll up. All in all not bad today, not not where I want to be, but its only Feb. 23rd.
